This 799A-6/150 Caliper says "China" on the bar code. Ironically, I was buying this to replace a harbor freight Centech. This Starrett Caliper has almost an identical design to the $15.00 Centech, and same build quality. If I wanted another China built Caliper, I would have just bought one, and saved more than $80. What I really needed is something better. You would think by paying over a hundred bucks, you would get that. For what's it's worth, here the review: Scale: appears to be lexan or something, dark black, hard to read. LCD: nothing special, I am sure it's clear to read. Battery, comes with one battery, not installed. Build Quality: Not bad and typical of other Chinese Calipers, but the depth gauge (the rod that comes out the bottom) is a bit wobbly. The Caliper's sliding action is a bit tight (not smooth). In these two... The caliper features auto on/off which saves battery, has a Zero button and can convert mm/SAE. I have never noticed it sliding open by itself as with this other review. The slide on my caliper is actually very tight. And it also has a tensioning screw on the back, so you can adjust the tension or lock it in place. Good calipers for my job. Pricey, but I didn't have to pay for them anyways. Ignoring all the happy Mitutoyo users at work I decided to try a product from an American company. Unfortunately this is a very cheaply made caliper, out of the box the display plastics appear to be delaminating. After a few months I noticed I had to replace the battery about once a week, it appeared to turn off as designed when stored but for whatever reason it would continue to drain the battery. So again tonight I went to replace the battery and the upright terminal broke off. It looks like the inexpensive surface solder finally fatigued and failed after having the battery replaced time after time.Sadly this once great brand doesn't produce a quality workhorse 6" digital caliper. I'll replace this unit with a traditional dial caliper to avoid the battery situation, and it will not be a Starrett. The Swiss made Brown and Sharpe model looks especially attractive. It is... Posted on Jul 8, 2011 3:40:21 AM PDT Dear Alex, First, let me apologize for the problems you experienced with your Starrett 799A-6/150 caliper. We would appreciate the opportunity to work with you in an effort to resolve these issues, to your satisfaction. The tool in the all red case, identified in the picture you posted along with your review, is an older product introduced 5 years ago and discontinued about 3 years ago. It was replaced by the next generation tool including a plastic case with the clear top. The older products had a protective clear film covering the lens that can be removed at any time. Removal of that protective film should resolve the lamination concern you mentioned. Our quality team acknowledged that the film on the earlier lens was difficult to remove and that this has been corrected with the next generation tool. I'm not sure when you purchased this tool but it is possible that it sat on a distributors shelf for some time. Batteries do have a shelf life and that could have contributed to your battery issues. Battery life for the current generation tool is 1 year and the terminals will not break. If you contact our customer service team at (843) 746-3578 and ask for Bill, I will gladly work to resolve your concerns. Kindest Regards, Starrett Customer Support - Bill |

Product Description
The Starrett 799A-6/150 digital caliper measures 0” to 6” and 0 to 150 mm with 0.0005” or 0.01 mm accuracy, and comes in a protective plastic case. This light, comfortable, and easy-to use measuring tool allows for reliable and accurate readings with the slim, streamlined design and large, easy-to-read LCD.
Lightweight, ergonomic design makes this caliper easy to use, even with one hand. The caliper can be used with one hand through operating the fine adjustment roll with the thumb. A lock screw can hold the slide in position. Depth rod is integrated into the rack of the caliper, unlike many calipers which offer a detachable depth rod, or none at all. The hardened stainless steel body offers corrosion resistance and long life. Single battery is easy to access, on the front of the plastic casing, next to the LCD. The last measurement position is retained when the caliper is shut off, and it is simple to zero the caliper at any position with the clearly marked zero button. Easy-to-read LCD is large, with 0.32” tall characters. The caliper shuts off automatically after five minutes of nonuse. Linear accuracy meets the internationally used Deutsches Institut fur Normung (DIN) 862: Vernier Calipers Requirements and Testing standards.
Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing, carpentry, and medicine. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The dial caliper is used also for measuring size differential between two objects. The digital caliper takes the same sort of differential measurements as the dial caliper by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD (replacing the dial) that displays a single, easily read value in both English and metric units. Some digital calipers can hold data readings between measurements and send them to data collection devices.
The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company was founded in 1880 and is headquartered in Athol, MA.
